Preparing things for the shoot, I put together an animatic for the big crash shot. Its missing a few important details, such as the engine explosion and the wing tearing off, but it does give a pretty accurate idea of the flight path of the plane. You can check out the Quicktime here. Or just watch the Youtube version right here below this.
There's also a few compositing issues that I'll have to come up with a solution for when the time comes. Such issues include: wind blowing trees as the plane passes overhead, dust from the wind blowing, dust coming from the impact of the wing and the plane, the shadow of the plane as it passes overhead and how it casts on the ground below (that's gonna be a fun one.) I'll continue to list things here as they come to me, mostly because it'll just serve as a reminder later down the line.
Did some work on the 747 today, finally modeling and texturing in the engines. The model itself is passable enough, although I may do some texturing tweaks and improvements in the time between now and the plate shoot. Check it out over on the right.
Speaking of which, I hope to get the shoot off the ground by next weekend, so after thats taken care of, I'll be sure to put up a big update.
Like I said earlier today, I was going to get a shot of the latest work up on the right as soon as I can. Just finished that, now you can see a shot of the current 747 model on the right plus a small comp I put together in Photoshop. The comp isn't anything important, it was just a test for me to see if the model could be placed in the scene believably, which I think is somewhat successful so far.
I'm going to get archives and commenting working on this page soon enough, for feedback purposes. This page will also be updated every single time I do anything on this project. This is an adventure and I plan to document it as such.
Hello. This is my little headquarters for my Studio I class at SCAD. I have nothing to really say at this point, this is the second day of class, but sooner rather than later I'm gonna start spamming this page with all sorts of news and information and technical details.
Here's a short rundown of my project and how (I think) I'm gonna go about this:
The project's working title is "Days Like These." Main character wakes up and goes about their morning business, plus doing things such as packing luggage, cleaning things up, doing dishes, and picking up their plane tickets off the kitchen counter. The big FX shot the project is all about comes when they walk down the sidewalk of their house, heading for the car, just in time to see a 747 streaking through the sky above the neighborhood. The engine explodes, rips the wing in two, which falls to the ground and crashes just behind the tree line. The rest of the plane continues on over the street and then crashes over the other side of the neighborhood. Our hero, seeing the odds in flying firsthand, turns around and bee lines back into the house.
First order of business is the clean plate and the footage being shot. Its hard to do dramatic without being cheesy, so I'm opting for a more comical approach. I also plan to shorten/stylize the opening montage of household duties by doing 2, maybe 3, panels of different scenes in one shot, sort of comic book style. I also plan to cut to white instead of black at the end, sort of like what Arrested Development does.
I have the 747 model more or less 85% complete, plus texturing, so thats on its way (which I'll put up a render of soon.) The explosion and crashing effects can't be added until the plane is animated, however, and the plane can't be animated until the project is shot and tracked. Hence, the first thing to do is the shoot. I also will be putting up the storyboards soon, which you can see with the currently non-working "Storyboards" link to the right.
I'm freaking excited about this project and I can't wait to get seriously into it, so hang out for a while and more will come.
